You can go at your own pace and intensity level during the intervals, and make the workout truly your own. The last 10 minutes of class are dedicated to recovery and stretching - your reward for your hard work! Some exercises will be standing, some will be on the mat. The intensity level is up to you, and various levels of intensity will be modeled.

STRENGTH TRAINING CLASS with Melissa

Instructor Bio

Melissa Cox, ACSM-GEI

A lifelong group exercise enthusiast, Melissa has been a group exercise instructor since 2011, when she began as a Zumba instructor. She went on to teach Zumba Toning and Group Active. She later completed trainings in PiYo Live and STRONG Nation (formerly STRONG by Zumba), and she is working toward her 200-hour yoga certification. In 2019 she completed an Active Aging certification through SCW, and she quickly developed an interest in working with older adults and providing movement and exercise to support life as we age.

Melissa is always eager to learn more, and she has completed certifications with the Functional Aging Institute, including the Functional Aging Specialist and Functional Aging Group Exercise Specialist certifications, as well as through the American Parkinson’s Disease Association. Most recently she has completed the Chair One Fitness training, focusing on dance-based exercise from a seated position. In addition to all of these, Melissa has recently received her Group Exercise Instructor certification from the American College of Sports Medicine.

Melissa brings all of her trainings into every class that she teaches, and ensures that every move has a purpose and connection to the way that we move in our lives. The idea of functional training is essential, regardless of our age, and it informs all of the work that Melissa does. She brings in elements of cardiovascular training, functional strength, balance, and cognitive training to her work.

Melissa is an avid runner, crazy cat lady, and is very involved in fundraising and advocacy for the American Cancer Society. She volunteers on the Event Leadership Team for Relay For Life of Rutland County, and is a proud Co-Captain of Team Nancy’s Nit Wits. In addition, she is a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, focusing on advocacy and legislative policy change to support cancer research and treatment.
